As a Japanese publisher based between London and Tokyo, we wanted to take a fresh look at our home country.
Japanese culture is attracting unprecedented global attention, with people from around the world visiting Japan. But beyond pop culture, fashion, and familiar images of Japan, we believe there are countless overlooked stories waiting to be discovered.
Through local folklore, vernacular cultures, and everyday ways of living, we seek wisdom that might offer new perspectives on contemporary life.
For this issue, we travelled to five places across Japan—Tono, Hida-Takayama, Taimagura, Ueno, and Fukushima—to explore the stories, knowledge, and creative practices rooted in these communities.
We hope this publication invites you to see Japan, and perhaps the world, a little differently.
